Does the central government still subsidize electric cars?
No. The current central scheme, PM E-DRIVE, covers electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers only, with a demand incentive of Rs 2,500 per kWh capped at Rs 5,000 per vehicle. Electric cars are not covered by PM E-DRIVE and rely on state-level incentives and GST benefits instead.
Why do EV prices vary so much by state?
Because state subsidies and road tax or registration fee waivers differ significantly. The gap between the most and least generous states can be Rs 1 to 2 lakh on the same car, mainly from road tax and registration exemptions.
Do these subsidies apply automatically?
Most state subsidies are applied as a direct price reduction by the dealer at the time of purchase, provided the vehicle and buyer meet eligibility criteria. Road tax and registration fee waivers are applied during RTO registration.
Is this subsidy data guaranteed accurate?
State EV policies are revised frequently and often have registration caps or expiry dates. Treat these figures as a starting point and confirm final numbers with your dealer or state transport department before purchase.
Can I combine central and state EV subsidies?
Yes, for two and three-wheelers you can typically combine the central PM E-DRIVE incentive with your state’s own subsidy, as they come from separate budgets. Electric cars only get state-level benefits since PM E-DRIVE excludes them.
What documents do I need to claim an EV subsidy?
Typically your vehicle invoice, RC application, proof of state residency, and the dealer’s subsidy claim form. Requirements vary by state, so confirm the exact list with your RTO or dealer before purchase.
